When applied to a 1964 Mercury Comet, the "K" code refers to a specific engine option. In 1964, the K code designated a 289 cubic inch V8 engine equipped with a hydraulic camshaft and a 4-barrel carburetor, rated at 210 horsepower.
This is not the high-performance "HiPo" 271-horsepower solid lifter 289 found in Mustangs and Fairlanes, but rather a unique Comet version sometimes called the "Super Cyclone" engine. The K code Comet typically received a chrome dress-up package and single exhaust system.
