In 1957 Ed Roth, along with Tom Kelly and Bud "The Baron" Crozier, opened a shop in South Gate, CA and began pin striping cars. They referred to themselves as "The Crazy Painters."
By then Ed had also made enough money to buy a brand new '57 Chevy. In an effort to promote the shop, Ed figured the car needed the "Roth Look," and so he put his name down the side in flames.
